La Pedrera
I painted the Pedrera during 2020, a year when images of deserted city streets were circulating around the globe. The sole figure on the left was taken from a period photograph and I thought her headgear was uncanilly similar to Gaudi's building. Gaudi himself is caught unawares in the lower right hand corner. Before painting Casa Milà, (La Pedrera, "the stone quarry"), I imagined layer upon layer of repitition. But nothing could be further from the truth: every opening on the building is unlike any other. The sparseness of this painting I hope lends the Pedrera a streamlined yet other-worldly quality.
